Spring Cleaning for Your Soul, Day 12: Cleanse Your Soul

Today you will be challenged with a “soul cleanse.”

What is a soul cleanse? This can mean different things to different people.

A soul cleanse has to do with facing your truth. It’s not easy being starkly honest with yourself. As much as people like to emphasize being truthful in all situations, we do tend to lie to ourselves about certain aspects of our life. This is called avoidance or denial.

Why do we lie to ourselves? We do it to spare ourselves emotional pain. If you grew up in a family where blame was often transferred to you, then guilt may follow you into all aspects of your life.

Guilt is a tough pill to swallow, especially when it’s self induced. If you were made to feel guilty when young, you may still carry that feeling with you. When difficulties arise in your life as they typically will, your psyche may hold you as a guilt-hostage over whatever happened.

Then, because the truth is too strong to bear, maybe you play an avoidance game in your mind. You tell yourself lies so you won’t have to face the situation, and the guilt that was placed upon you oh so many decades ago.

In your soul cleanse today, you’re going to boldly go where guilt refuses to take you. In avoiding the truth about what happened and how you may have played a part in something difficult, you can avoid the bad feelings.

But the feelings are actually caused by the pre existing guilt conditioning that you received from an early age. In fact, the feeling you’re trying so hard to avoid may actually have nothing at all to do with what’s currently happening in your life.

Journal Exercise: Unburden Your Soul, Set Your Spirit Free

How do good people get tangled up in bad situations? One is by going in with eyes closed. If your eyes have been blinded to a harsh reality of your life, today you’re going to open them.

So for your journaling exercise, you’re going to write about something that’s going on in your life that’s bothering you and making you uncomfortable.

It may be a “big” relationship thing that you’ve tried to hide from yourself.

It may be a dynamic that continues to play out between you and someone else, that’s causing you emotional discomfort.

It may be an ongoing situation in your life that’s making you unhappy or uncomfortable. The thing that you’re taking part in or not speaking up about is not in alignment with your values – who you are as a person.

Write about what’s bothering you or whatever you have been avoiding. Be brutally honest with yourself to the point that your issue can no longer be swept under cover or denied.

Keep in mind that you don’t have to share what you’ve written with anyone. This is your own soul cleanse – a private time to contemplate and reconnect with your inner feelings.

Set Your Intention:

Once you’ve done the hard work of being honest with yourself – how will you work on changing the situation?

-Who do you need to speak to?

-What will you say to them?

-What actions will you take to initiate change?

-If you feel that you’ve done wrong or let someone else down, how can you right your mistake?

-If you feel that you’ve been taken advantage of, how can you set a boundary for the future?
